ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness), also known as the Hare Krishna movement, is a religious organization that promotes the practice of bhakti yoga, the path of devotion, as taught in the ancient scriptures of India, particularly the Bhagavad Gita and the Srimad Bhagavatam. The movement was founded in 1966 by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

ISKCON has had a significant presence in America since its inception. In 1965, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada arrived in New York City with the aim of spreading Krishna consciousness in the Western world. He established the first ISKCON temple in the United States, known as the “Hare Krishna Temple,” in New York City in 1966. This temple, located at 26 Second Avenue, became the headquarters of ISKCON and served as a hub for the movement’s activities.

The Hare Krishna movement gained popularity in the 1960s and 1970s, attracting many followers, especially among the youth counterculture of that era. The chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra, a central practice in the movement, became well-known and often associated with ISKCON. The movement also emphasized vegetarianism, karma-free food (prasadam), and various devotional practices such as kirtan (group chanting), deity worship, and the distribution of spiritual literature.

ISKCON expanded its presence across the United States by establishing temples and centers in various cities. Today, there are numerous ISKCON temples and centers throughout the country, including prominent ones in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C. These temples serve as spiritual centers, offering regular religious services, festivals, lectures, and programs for the community.

ISKCON’s outreach efforts in America have included the distribution of literature, such as books and magazines, as well as food distribution programs and social welfare initiatives. The movement has also been involved in educational activities, establishing gurukula schools (traditional Vedic schools) and educational institutions that combine spiritual teachings with academic education.

Over the years, the Hare Krishna movement in America has faced challenges and controversies, including legal battles, internal disputes, and public perception issues. However, ISKCON continues to have a significant presence and a dedicated following in the United States, with devotees actively practicing and promoting Krishna consciousness in their daily lives.

It’s worth noting that my knowledge cutoff is in September 2021, so there may have been developments or changes in the ISKCON movement in America since then.
