Legendary singer S P Balasubrahmanyam passed away at the end of 52 days of continuous fighting.  He died at a hospital in Chennai around noon on Friday.  He was 74 years old at the time of his death.

The veteran musician was admitted to a private hospital in Chennai on August 5 after suffering from corona.  A month later, on September 6, his corona test report came back negative.  However, he could not be removed from the ventilator due to respiratory problems.  He was later given a ventilator as well as ‘ECMO Support’ (artificially supplied extra oxygen).

His condition was thought to be improving.  Last Tuesday, the artist’s son S P Charan tweeted that his father’s condition was improving.  He said his father also wanted to return home.  But a bulletin signed by Anuradha Bhaskaran, assistant medical director of the Chennai hospital, said on Wednesday that his condition had deteriorated within 24 hours.  He is extremely critical.  He has been placed on the highest life support.  Kamal Hasan, a veteran actor of the southern film, went to the hospital after getting the news that S P was in danger.  A speedy recovery was sought by industry colleagues and countless fans.

He was born on 4 June 1948 in Madras (now Chennai).  From a young age he had a special fondness for music.  He got his start in the music world in 1986 with a Telugu film.  After that, one by one, he sang in various Hindi and Tamil Telugu films and got the title of the first line singer in the industry.  He has a record of recording 21 songs in one day.  Salman Khan’s rise in Bollywood is largely due to SP.

Salman made his Bollywood debut in 1989 with ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’.  All the songs lipped by Salman in the film were sung by Balsubrahmanyam, including ‘Aate Jaate’, ‘Dil Diwana’ and ‘Mere Rang Mein’.  After that, in 1991, Balsubrahmanyam sang seven songs for Salman in the movie ‘Patthar Ke Phool’.  The songs ‘Kavi Tu Chaliya Lagta Hai’ and ‘Tumse Jo Dekhte Hi Pyaar Hua’ are two super hits.  In the same year, in the film ‘Saajan’, SP’s song ‘Bahut Pyar Karte Hain’, ‘Tumse Milne Ki Tamanna Hai’, ‘Paheli Bar Mile Hain’ is still bright in the minds of the listeners.  Later, of course, the Salman-SP pair broke up due to special reasons.

The death of S P Balsubrahmanyam has also cast a shadow of mourning over the industry.  From AR Rahman, Akshay Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mahesh Babu have expressed their grief over the death of their favorite singer.  Salman Khan is also broken.  On the same day, he wrote on Twitter, “Heartbreaking to hear about SP Balasubrahmanyam sir… you will forever live on in your undisputed legasy of music. Condolence to the family.”
